Curated by: Julie Gandini, head curator Le Fonds d’art contemporain – Paris Collections
This year, for the first time, Paris Municipality will be an Art Paris partner and will be presenting the Fonds d’art contemporain - Paris Collections at the fair. The only public collection on display amongst the exhibiting galleries, the City of Paris’s collection is made up of almost 23,500 works from the end of the 19th century to the present day. Every year, new works are added to the collection as part of the municipality’s actions in support of arts professionals. During the fair, the Fonds d’art contemporain – Paris Collections will be presenting an ensemble of modern and contemporary works from the collection that resonate with this edition’s focus on figurative painting from both a historic and contemporary perspective, while juxtaposing traditional and radical approaches.
The Fonds d’art contemporain – Paris Collections has decided to present an ensemble of modern and contemporary works from its collection that resonate with this edition’s focus on figurative painting, thereby underlining both noticeable radical changes in style and a continuity in terms of subject. This ensemble, whose oldest work dates back to 1910 and the most recent to 2023, reveals the emergence of a renewed protective attitude amongst humankind and an individual and collective aspiration for freedom, while asserting the decisive role played by women artists since the beginning of the 20th century. Several paintings from the 1930s and 1950s also address questions of personal life, or deal with typical painting genres (landscape, still life and portraiture - both individual, group and self-portraits).
